Cosplayers Are Part of the Show
geek culture wear some pretty cool and outrageous outfits, spicing up whatever convention they are at. While they aren’t officially hired by the convention hosts, they are often encouraged to be part of the event in small ways. That’s doesn’t mean they sit on the panels, but they are welcome to come on the show floor, speak to attendees, pose and have their pictures taken.
They are encouraged because they are some of the most dedicated fans, and they are likely to not only attract more people to the event but to play an important role in the event themselves. If you are cosplaying, then you are part of the show, and that means you should act the part. If you go in costume, expect to be asked some questions and have people occasionally want to take photos with you.
If you see someone in costume and looking down, be sure to give them a word of encouragement and tell them you like their costume. Cosplayers can have less than savoury experiences at conventions, and it can be difficult for them to keep up a happy demeanour through the entire event, especially when they cosplay in uncomfortable costumes and people are harassing them.
Be sure you make them feel welcome and to have some fun interactions with them. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy yourself when you bring out the best in cosplayers. You may find that their personalities are as colorful as their costumes.
